Volleyball splits on day one of Spiketacular

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Beavers wrapped up day one of the Bluffton Sommer Spiketacular with a 1-1 mark. The Bluffton volleyball team picked up an impressive win over Adrian College in three sets (27-25, 25-20, 25-20). Junior Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North) led the team with 16 kills and she also chipped in 11 digs.
Senior Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Catholic) registered a team-best 20 digs in the sweep. Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) doled out 29 assists for the victors.
The nightcap saw Bluffton slugging it out with the regional power DePauw Tigers. Bluffton came out on fire, taking the first set (25-17). DePauw came back and won the next set (25-18). The trend of back and forth continued in the third and fourth sets before DePauw broke the pattern with a 15-9 victory in the clincher. Bethany Martini did not hold back, leading the team in kills again with 18 putdowns to go along with and her 13 digs.
Freshman Remi Bower (Deshler/Patrick Henry) added 12 kills in the five-setter. Middle hitter Carley Lester (Chesapeake) paced the Beavers with 10 kills and five blocks, including two big solos. Sydney Mohler was dominant in the back row, tallying 30 pickups, while junior Abby Rohrbach (New Knoxville) added 18 digs. Erin Weisgarber handed out 43 assists against DePauw.
Bluffton will get back to business on Saturday, Sept. 2 when the Beavers take on Wheaton College at noon before capping off the Sommer Center Spiketacular with a 4 p.m. showdown against Kalamazoo College on Court 1.
