University golf recap at Ken Venturi Invitational
The Bluffton University men's golf team traveled to Trine University for the Ken Venturi Invitational on a hot Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021. This annual event, which Bluffton's golfers have already marked on their calendar for 2022, consists of players in pairs who are competing in three different partner events. Holes 1-6 were contested as a scramble, 7-12 were best ball, and 13-18 was modified alternate shots with both players driving and then alternating after the best tee shot was used. The format was adopted by long-time Trine men's golf coach Bill SanGiacomo.
It was a day of fun in the sun for the Beavers who used the tandem play to build team camaraderie heading into the Beaver Classic this weekend. The Ken Venturi Invitational honors the man who was a 14-time PGA winner and 35-year veteran of the CBS announcing booth.
Bluffton's 212 placed the Beavers ahead of Ohio Northern and just off the pace set by host Trine University at Zollner Golf Course.
Leading the Beavers was the duo of senior Spencer Daniels (Ashland) and freshman Hunter Joliff (Elida) who finished with a 69 thanks to a 21 in the scramble portion of the afternoon. Nathan Eberle (Grove City) and Brayden Tosi (Springfield/Kenton Ridge) checked in with a 71, while junior Clay Quellhorst (St. Marys/Memorial) and Dominic Castelvetere (Ontario) finished with a 72 on Tuesday.
Bluffton will be on its home links when the Beaver Fall Classic tees off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18.
