Photo-story: Elementary PTO coordinates huge STEM event
On Friday, April 1, the three largest spaces in the Bluffton Elementary and Middle School were filled with families exploring activities related to science, technology, engineering and math during the Elementary PTO Science Night. The Middle School gym, cafetorium and Elementary School gym were packed with people lining up and participating in all kinds of entertaining and educational challenges. Examples of stations:
- Estimating and testing how fast you can throw three different kinds of balls
- Holding and examining a sheep’s brain
- Observing images through a microscope and drawing what you see
- Listening to someone’s heartbeat through a stethoscope
- Creating and flight testing a paper airplane
- Making a foil boat and testing how many pennies it can hold and still float
- Making a display of the phases of the moon using Oreo cookies
- Making an LED flashlight out of household items
The activity stations were provided by businesses, universities and Bluffton Schools staff and high school students (article on providers). Students who turned in stamped blue "passports" earned a UV light pen and were entered in a door prize drawing.
Parents had the opportunity to observe and interact with their children while they explored a wide variety of topics and materials.
