The visiting Bluffton High School softball team lost a tough non-league doubleheader at St. Marys Saturday, April 2.
The Pirate girls dropped to 0-3 with the defeats. Bluffton lost the opener 5-0, and lost the shortened nightcap 8-7.
St. Marys jumped on top in the first inning of the first game on a three-run homer by pitcher Karsyn McGlothen.
The Roughriders added two more scores in the fourth frame with the aid of a Kaylynn Mabry RBI double.
SM hurler McGlothen limited Bluffton to just three hits in pitching a shutout.
Addie Basinger, Olivia Hobensack and Sophie Bricker each hit a single to account for the Pirate hits.
In the nightcap, Bluffton out-hit SM 13-4 but still lost a one-run nailbiter.
SM built an 8-4 lead after three innings. The Pirates rallied with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, but came up just shy as the game was called after five innings.
Pirate Ashley Fleece knocked out three singles to pace the offensive attack.
Lauren Bassett compiled two hits and one RBI. Lauren Swartzlander collected two hits and a run batted in. Hobensack added two hits.
Bricker and Hannah Davis each contributed one single.
