Excessive heat watch issued by National Weather Service, June 17-21
The National Weather Service has issued the following urgent weather message for the forecast region including Bluffton: Excessive Heat Watch in effect from Monday morning (June 17) through Friday evening (June 21). Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values around 100 degrees.
IMPACTS
Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.
Heat indices into the mid to upper 90s are possible next weekend beyond the time of the watch. The prolonged nature of the event may magnify impacts as we move into the latter portions of the week.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS
Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates on this situation. Be prepared to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
