Dr. Lucia Unrau is awarded the Ohio Music Teachers Association Collegiate Teacher of the Year award by Dr. Michael Benson, Certification Chair of OhioMTA.

Dr. Lucia Unrau, professor of music and music department chair at Bluffton University, was awarded the Ohio Music Teachers Association Collegiate Teacher of the Year award during the annual state conference Nov. 5-7 in Van Wert.

"I am honored to receive this prestigious award," said Unrau. "Teaching is very important to me and it's great to be recognized in this manner." She was nominated by teachers in the Middle West district which ranges from the Findlay area to Bellefontaine and west to the Indiana border. Unrau is the first Bluffton music faculty member to receive the award.

Bluffton University hosted "Celebration of Peace: Beyond Borders" children's conference, Oct. 23-24 at The Lion and The Lamb Peace Arts Center. Thirty-two children from third through seventh grade participated in the conference. Bluffton students, faculty and staff and local community members served as volunteers.

Daniel Mast, a senior at Bluffton University didn't want to spend a typical summer at his home in Goshen, Ind. Instead, the middle childhood education major opted to get out of the Midwest, and volunteer in Albuquerque, N.M.

Mast volunteered at a program located in the Sandia Vista apartments in Albuquerque. The children enrolled in the program were pre-school age through sixth grade and lived in the apartment complex. During the school year, the program functions as an after-school program.

On Tuesday, Nov. 17 Bluffton University will host guest speaker Saulo Padilla, director of the Office of Immigration for the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). He will present as part of Bluffton's Forum series at 11 a.m. in Founders Hall. The Forum is free and open to the public.

A 2005 graduate of Goshen College and the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in 2008, Padilla has great interest in social justice.

Deborah Myers, associate professor of dietetics and dietetics program director, will present "Getting In(ternships): Discovering what dietetic internship directors value most from applicants in today's competitive environment."

Her presentation is at 4 p.m. Friday Nov. 20 in Stutzman Lecture Hall in Centennial Hall, as part of Bluffton University's Friday Colloquium Series. The event is free and open to the public.

Myers earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at Purdue University.

The NCAA Honors Committee has named the 2007 Bluffton University baseball team andLieutenant Colonel Greg Gadson as recipients of the 2010 Award of Inspiration.

They will be recognized during the 2010 Honors Celebration in January at the NCAA Convention in Atlanta.

On March 2, 2007, a charter bus carrying 30 of 42 student-athletes and three coaches of the Bluffton University baseball team to their season opener in Florida, fell off an overpass onto Interstate 75 in Atlanta, killing five student-athletes and the driver and his wife.
