Except for the price of gas, Village of Bluffton finances appear to be on target so far this year. That's a quick overview of the first quarter of 2011 as reported to Bluffton council by Nancy Kindle, village fiscal officer.

Kindle gave her assessment at Monday's council meeting. She said that revenue and expenses are "where we expected them to be." She continued: "The budget is holding up except for the price of gas." She indicated that if the price continued to increase this summer the village could face some tough decisions.

How a society can escape poverty begins with having more, or better versions, of four things, a Bluffton University economist says.

Leading the list are more, and better, ideas, Dr. Jonathan Andreas, an assistant professor of economics at Bluffton, told a campus audience April 5. Outlining global poverty history at the university's annual Civic Engagement Forum, Andreas credited improved technology, "more than anything else," with helping alleviate poverty in the last 200 years.

Charles Niswander and Phillip Kingsley presented ideas for a proposed Bluffton Heritage Center to an over-flow audience of 75 persons at Friday's Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce breakfast.

We need some assistance from Icon views on the background of this business. Checking out the merchandise in the store, one sees ringer washing machines, refrigerators, freezers, mixers, electric ranges and sweepers.

We're placing this photo in the late 1950s. Viewer information is welcome.
