Jenna Eshleman (Landisville, Penn./Hempfield) has been named the Heartland Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 4, 2011. It marks the third time Eshleman has been named HCAC Player of the Week for volleyball.

The 2nd Annual "Great Pumpkin" 5K Run and 1-mile Walk will be held on Saturday, October 8th in Woodlawn Cemetery on Spencerville Road.

The Historic Walk through the cemetery begins at 4 p.m. and the 5K Run starts at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by Senior Citizens Services and Woodlawn Cemetery.

Both events are open to the public. Cost to pre-register for the Run is $15 which includes a t-shirt. Registration the day of the event is $15 with no shirt. The 1-mile Walk is free and is not a time event.

The First Mennonite Church Mennonite Women 2011-12 programming schedule is in place.

The first meeting is Monday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. The theme is Wonderfully Made - Caring for Self: A Mennonite Spa. Refreshments are by Linda Suter and Mary Ann Ring.

Meeting themes this year are "Wonderfully Made: Women, Faith and Self-Care." Meetings are Oct. 10, Nov. 14, Nov. 15, Jan. 12, Feb. 13, March 12, March 13, April to be announced and July 11.

Danielle Laing

Danielle Laing has returned home. The 1987 (Danielle Kihm) Bluffton High School graduate was named Bluffton Post Office officer in charge on Aug. 31.

She and her husband, Steve, also a Bluffton High School graduate, are parents to two children and live in the Columbus Grove school district. Laing has nearly 15 years experience in the post office. In addition to her Bluffton assignment, she is also postmaster at Alger.

Beginning Monday, Sept. 12, storytime for preschoolers ages 3-5 will be held at the Bluffton Public Library on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesdays at 10 a.m.

Themes this fall include apples, scarecrows, Halloween and Thanksgiving. Storytime will also celebrate National Honey Month in September and Young Reader's Day on Nov. 8.

Don and Jodi Brauen's Gourds fall open house is coming soon. The event is Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17-18, at the Brauen rural home at 7140 Tom Fett Road, south of Bluffton.

Open house hours are Saturday, Sept. 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. The open house is held one-half time north of Stratton's Greenhouse between Old U.S. 30 and Shifferly Road.

Lyle Arnold won the first Icon college football contest. He picked eight correct games and was closest to the acutal score of the Blufton-Kalamazoo game of all contestants in the tie-breaker.

Ohio Northern University's Freed Center for the Performing Arts presents "Colin and Brad: Two Man Group," featuring Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood from the hit improvisational show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?," on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Adult programs are starting up for the fall at BFR.
