If you are an older Bluffton Baby Boomer this fisherman probably checked your eyes at some point in your life.

This is a photo of Dr. Gordon Bixel, O.D., with what appears to be his cath of the day - a northern pike? No this was not the tagged fish of the 1921 trout derby. But it's possible that the photo was taken around 1921.

If you've had your eyes checked by Dr. Bixel, you may comment on this photo. Dr. Alan Yoder assumed Dr. Bixel's practice on Main Street upon Dr. Bixel's retirement.

Dr. Shelly Weaverdyck

Dr. Shelly Weaverdyck is a believer in her work as a teacher, researcher and consultant.

"The brain is where it's at," she said Feb. 7 at Bluffton University, her alma mater. "It's the frontier."

Now the director of the Alzheimer's Education and Research Program at Eastern Michigan University, Weaverdyck addressed "When the Brain Goes Awry: Effects of Brain Quirks and Disorders on Thinking and Doing" in her Bluffton Forum talk.

This Arkansas plate was spotted in the Riley Court parking lot.

Beulah E. Neff Griffith

Beulah E. Neff Griffith, 80, of Bluffton died at 1:40 p.m. Feb. 9, 2012, at the Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton. She was born May 5, 1931 in Bluffton to Elmer and Edith Shrider Burkholder.

On Dec. 9, 1951, she married Richard Neff and he preceded her in death on Oct. 30, 1994. On April 14, 2002 she married Greene Griffith and he died Feb. 10, 2008.

Mrs. Griffith was a homemaker and had worked at the Glove Factory, Triplett Corp., Terry's Drive In and Millager's Pharmacy all of Bluffton.

Jean Muller, 80 of Bluffton died at 6:40 p.m. Feb. 9, 2012 at his residence. Arrangements are incomplete at Chiles-Laman Funeral and Cremation Services, Bluffton.

The first semester has come and gone, and our students and staff are settling into the second semester. As always, our students and staff are working hard to maintain and exceed our Excellent with Distinction rating on the Ohio Department of Education report card.

Specifically, our staff is working on the new Academic Content Standards (known as the Common Core) that have been passed and adopted by 46 states.

Saturday offers several options for fun, food and fellowship in Bluffton. Whether its pancakes that fly, Valentine treats or ethnic cuisine, there's plenty of "let's eat out" options and more on the calendar. Here are the details:

Cupid's Cupboard and Cafe

Cupid's Cupboard and Cafe is coming to St. John's United Church of Christ from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11.

The event includes a bake sale with Valentine treats packaged and wrapped.

Let's take a trip. The Bluffton Senior Center announces the spring and summer trip schedule for 2012 and there's plenty of room for anyone interested. Here's this year's itinery:

March 3 - "Fiddler on the Roof" at Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Van Wert.

March 10 - "Lima Beane Barbershop Harmony Show" at Lima Civic Center.

The Bluffton women's basketball team dropped their third straight road contest to Manchester College (70-50) on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012. The Beavers slipped to 8-14 overall (6-9 HCAC), while the Spartans improved to 15-7 on the season (11-4 HCAC).
