NEW RECYCLING AND REFUSE GUIDELINES LISTED AT BOTTOM OF THIS STORY.

As the new refuse and recycling rules have taken affect, several Bluffton customers have asked the village if smaller capacity garbage totes are an option.

According to Jamie Mehaffie, village administrator, Republic Services has acquired several 35-gallon totes. He said that the village is accepting requests for the small totes as they come in and are coordinating delivery for those smaller totes.

What question is asked almost as often as: “When is Halloween in Bluffton?”  That question is: “When is Bluffton’s fireworks?”

This year’s answer is: “There is none this year.”

In previous years the Bluffton-Pandora Rotary Club provided fireworks as part of its Freedom Fest, held on the last weekend of June at Bluffton University’s Salzman’s Stadium.

Last year the Bluffton Lions Club took on the project, however the June 29 windstorm seriously impacted the event and the only portion of the ‘Fest was the fireworks show.

Harold E. Andrews, 90, died at 2:30 a.m. June 21, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System.  He was born July 15, 1922, in Bluffton to the late Paul and Clara (Fett) Andrews.

He attended the Phillips one room school until fourth grade. He later graduated from Beaverdam High School in 1940. After graduating from high school he helped farm on the family farm until he entered the U.S. Army where he was a communications operator serving with the 505 PIR 82nd Airborne Division E. Company 2nd Battalion.

A group of local children were concerned when they heard about the break-in at Mustard Seed Cafe on May 28. The youths decided to show their support by raising money for a new window. The Oaks children and Isaiah Mikesell set up a lemonade stand in Riverbend on June 5 and presented the proceeds ($8.27) to the cafe.

FOUR WINNER PHOTOS AT BOTTOM OF STORY

Four residents from Bluffton’s Maple Crest and three from the Mennonite Memorial Home were winners in this year’s LeadingAge of Ohio Art and Writing competition.

The show for the West region was hosted on June 20 by Good Samaritan Center, Arlington. All eight MHCO entries won first, second and third place ribbons. These high finishes qualifies each contestant to enter the state level contest on Sept. 11-12 in Columbus.

Bluffton winners follow:

Mennonite Memorial Home hosted its annual Men’s Banquet on June 19. The banquet gave  elders and guests- either sons, grandson, uncles, or friends - a chance to have a good time of food and fellowship.

MMH hosted a catered supper from Special Occasions in Upper Sandusky and the Service Group of MHCO made the pies for dessert.

A name that is fading from the Bluffton vernacular is "Gratz Crossing." It is where the Dixie Highway crosses the Norfolk Southern Railway track where it connects to Phillips Road south of Bluffton.

This photo shows the Lake Erie and Western Railroad track from "Gratz Crossing." On the far right is the Western Ohio Railroad (interurban) These two track were side by side  at this point. This view looks toward Lima to the south. The photographer was S.A. Amstutz. This is a glass plate negative.

The Bluffton Area Ministerial Association (BAMA) is planning an outdoor community worship service on Sunday July 28, at 9 a.m.

This worship service comes at the end of a week of Vacation Bible School (VBS) hosted this year at the First Mennonite Church. The theme for the service is “Many Gifts, One Spirit,” growing out of the VBS curriculum. Worship will include music by the children who attended VBS and several brief reflections about the new things that are happening in the community.
