Hannah Chappell-Dick, freshman,  and the Eastern Mennonite University women's track and field team picked up one final honor from the 2012-13 athletic year, as each was awarded for academic work by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

 

The Lady Royals were one of 148 institutions to earn an All-Academic Team recognition.  Eastern Mennonite had a team GPA of 3.10, just hitting the benchmark for team status.

Steven Strong is the newest addition to the Trinity Lutheran School faculty in Jenera.  He is currently serving as the seventh and eighth grade teacher and principal of the school. 

He graduated in May from Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn., with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and secondary chemistry. 

Strong grew up in Wisconsin and Minnesota, the latter where he spent most of his life.  He attended Salem Lutheran School in Greenfield, Minn., as well as West Lutheran High School in Plymouth, Minn. 

Bluffton Icon has renewed its membership in the Online News Association (ONA).

The Online News Association is composed largely of professional digital journalists. Founded in 1999, ONA now has more than 2,000 professional members whose principal livelihood involves gathering or producing news for digital presentation.

NPR broadcast a feature on Green House Homes on July 24. Willow Ridge, part of the Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio, has two Green House homes.

BFR Sports and Fitness will hold its annual benefit 5K race Saturday, Aug. 31 at BFR. 

5K Run/Walk

The 5K Run/Walk course travels through the streets of Bluffton and around the Buckeye Park. While the course remains the same from prior years, the Lima Run and Jog Club will be timing the event and determining winners.

The Icon has posted the registration form for BFR Sports and Fitness crafts and home business expo set during Bluffton's fall festival on Saturday, Sept. 28.

The event is a BFR fundraiser. Persons wanting additional information may contact Carole Enneking, BFR director.

A 5K run and walk sponsored by The Center for Autism and Dyslexia – Findlay and Lima – will take place Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Sommer Center at Bluffton University.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. The run and walk begins at 9 a.m. Persons who register by Aug. 30 receive a T-shirt.  Early registrations are $15. Registrations on the day of the event (no T-Shirts available) are $20.

The Bluffton-Beaverdam-Richland Township United Way will hold a "work night" at 6:30 p.m.,  Aug. 13, in the Bluffton Middle School Cafetorium.

"The more who attend, the quicker we can get our sorting, stuffing, and labeling completed and everyone can be on their way to enjoy the rest of the evening," said Linda Fleming of the board.

 

From root beer floats on the porch to Suzuki violin recital, August is full of activities at Maple Crest Senior Living Village.

ArtSpace/Lima announces the opening of ArtSpace/Pops 2013: A Fine Craft Invitational in The Ellen Nelson Gallery, Friday, Aug. 2.

ArtSpace/Pops features all new works by 22 area craftsmen and women in a joint showing, which builds on the success of its predecessors in 2011 and 2012. Several of the artists are from Bluffton or have local connections.
