The Civil War ended 150 years ago, but most Americans still don’t know the main reason it started, contends the author of a bestselling book about “bad” history education in textbooks.

And even fewer are probably familiar with what Dr. James Loewen calls “the most important era in U.S. history you’ve never heard of”—an era, he adds, that’s still relevant today.

Here's a great way to keep warm.

It's time to think about the 2015 Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce arts and crafts show.

The 44th annual downtown event moves to the third Saturday of May this year, making it Saturday, May 16. In recent years it was held on the Saturday prior to Mother's Day.

Shots were not falling and points were not adding up for the Pirates as they played host to the Kenton Wildcats on Tuesday night, Jan. 27, but a strong defensive effort from the home team helped tame a physical Wildcats offense and helped lead BHS to a low scoring, 43-37 victory.

The win pushed the Pirates record to 11-3 (1-2 NWC) and helped them extend their record to 3-1 against Western Buckeye League opponents this season.

Child Advocacy Organization, CASA, of Allen and Putnam Counties is looking to expand their reach of advocacy, hoping to double the amount of children assisted over the next two years. 

To reach that goal will require an increase of funding and volunteers. If you desire to investigate becoming an advocate, CASA will be hosting a new volunteer orientation on Thursday, Jan. 29 with two available time slots; 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., or 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Bluffton Community Preschool, housed in the First United Methodist Church, is gearing up for 2015-16 enrollment, according to Shelly Matijevich, director.

"With the new year we are excited to get geared up for enrollment of 2015-2016 program years. If you are interested in our program for the fall please send us an email [email protected] and you will be contacted in February for pre-enrollment," she said.

Todd Basinger, Randy Preston and Shane Bugner each bowled games of 279 to tie for men’s high game scores last week at Southgate Lanes. Gina Bloomfield’s 248 was the high woman’s game score.
