Matthew Spallinger, a 2013 graduate of Bluffton High School and a 2015 graduate of the University of  Rio Grande, took first place for his Highboy Dresser in the Case Goods category in the Association of Woodworking Furnishings & Suppliers (AWFS) Fresh Wood competition for North American students considering a career in woodworking held in Las Vegas.

Ada sports fans are dumping Bronco jerseys. They briefly traded those for Bears' jerseys. Now they are wearing Houston Texan jerseys.

As of Sept. 6, former Ada High School football standout Zac Dysert is now a Houston Texan.

The Texans signed Dysert to their practice squad one day after placing quarterback Tom Savage on injured reserve with a severely sprained shoulder.

Dysert was cut by the Broncos during the preseason when he was beaten out by rookie Trevor Siemian and was briefly with the Chicago Bears.

The Bluffton community’s 12th annual Fall Festival, with many family-oriented activities, takes place throughout the community on Saturday, Sept. 26, according to Daren Lee of Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio, who coordinates the festival.

Events take place at Maple Crest Senior Living Village, Mennonite Memorial Home, downtown Bluffton, at the Swiss Community Historical Society homestead on Bixel Road, Bluffton Family Recreation and Bluffton Public Library.

Bluffton Community Preschool, housed in First United Methodist Church, 116 Church St., opens on Sept. 9 for the 2015-16 school year, according to Shelly Matijevich, director.

The preschool is for children ages 3, 4 and 5 and it prepares them for Kindergarten.

A preschool brochure, listing tuition fees and additional information is in an attachment at the bottom of this story.

Class for Monday and Wednesday students begins on Sept. 9. Class for Tuesday and Thursday students begins on Sept. 10. The full schedule takes place the following week.

Janice R. Reese, 84 died Sept. 5, 2015 at Lima Memorial Hospital.  Arrangements are incomplete at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Bluffton.

The Bluffton Hospital Gift Shop, previously located inside the Garau Street entrance, has moved inside the new Emergency Department entrance of the hospital.

The Gift Shop offers gift items for every occasion, including baby gifts, as well as jewelry, greeting cards and Dietsch’s candy. All proceeds benefit Bluffton Hospital.

Bluffton Hospital is seeking volunteers to help staff the Gift Shop Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Positions are flexible and able to accommodate most schedules.

The Allen County Master Gardener Association will be hosting The Butterfly Migration Celebration on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. at The Children’s Garden in Lima.

This event features the release of dozens of monarch butterflies; butterfly-themed children’s activities; an educational butterfly presentation and much more.

For a half, the 2015 tilt between Bluffton and Van Buren looked oddly familiar to the 2014 edition.  Stormy weather was all around, big hits abounded and the score was low.

However, in the second half, Bluffton wore down the Knight defense and the Pirate running backs ran over, around and through the visitors for a 35-14 victory.  Bluffton moved to 2-0 on the season with the victory while Van Buren falls to 0-2.
