Representatives from across the spectrum of Mennonite education gathered at Bluffton University Oct. 16-18 for a conference on the network’s past, present and future.
The weekend event attracted 120 attendees, from elementary schools to colleges and including presidents, scholars, teachers and graduates.
The Bluffton University "Diagnosis and Educational Planning class taught by Tim Byers recently spent an evening with Peter De Meo a new Bluffton resident.
De Meo, an adult with Cerebral Palsy, recently returning to the area after years in California.
The class heard about his childhood, school issues, traveling with his disability, health related issues, positive and negative teacher issues, developing peer relationships, his career in California, and daily challenges which he has dealt with.
The place to be was War Memorial Stadium in Ada on Friday evening.
The field turned out to be aptly named as the Bluffton Pirate football team fought, scratched and clawed their way to a 27-21 victory over Ada. The win was of high importance for a few reasons.
First, it stopped a three-game losing streak for the Pirates. In a much longer term, it snapped an eight-year losing streak at the hands of the Bulldogs. Both Ada and Bluffton owned 5-3 records heading into Week 9.
Following a big win on Friday against Ada, the Bluffton High School football team moved from 12th to 10th in Division VI state computer rankings. The top eight teams advance to the playoffs.
Brendon Matthews was promoted to senior lender at First National Bank, according to Todd Mason, of the bank.
Since joining First National Bank in 2006, Matthews has held various positions including loan officer and sales director. In his new role he will manage the loan department and credit function for the bank and will continue to service his small business customers.
Prior to First National Bank, he worked in several roles at Madison Community Bank, Anderson, Ind.
Alex Parker came to Bluffton University in 2012 with a deep voice and a dream.
OK, maybe not a dream, at least when it came to his voice. “I didn’t think it would do anything for me,” says the senior from Alger, Ohio.
But his time at Bluffton has changed his opinion, as he approaches graduation with experience acquired both on stage and in radio, where his career thoughts are leaning.
