Bestselling author shares thoughts on integrity with Bluffton students

Sometimes it’s the little things we do in life that have the most impact.

“New York Times” bestselling author, Nathan Whitaker, shared this message with Bluffton’s new students during Opening Convocation on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

“I think it’s easy for us to devalue what we do or say. That what we do isn’t going to impact anybody,” explained Whitaker, co-author of “Quiet Strength” the memoir of Super-Bowl winning coach Tony Dungy.

For personnel-hiring

Bluffton council will hold a special meeting at 5:45 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 31, according to Judy Augsburger, mayor. The meeting is in the town hall.

The purpose of the meeting is for personnel-hiring, she told the Icon.

Phyllis Ruth (Sawatzky) Friesen, 77, died on Aug. 27, 2017. She was born on June 3, 1940, in Butterfield, Minnesota, to Rev. Victor and Ruth Louise (Phifer) Sawatzky. 

On June 2, 1961, she married Ronald Lee Friesen, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Friesen graduated from Pawnee Rock (Kansas) High School and attended Bethel College (Kansas).

Phyllis and her husband lived in Tanzania, East Africa for several years. She lived in Bluffton, Ohio, the rest of her life.

Gardeners of the Bluffton Pandora Area will visit a succulent garden on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

The members will tour the garden of Sandy Bindel, master gardener volunteer. The group will leave from Family Dollar parking lot at 5:55 p.m.

Dr. Jatinder Patti joins Neurosurgical Associates of Northwest Ohio at 1641 N Lake Drive, Findlay.

Dr. Patti completed medical school at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College in Faridkot, India. 

He completed his internship in internal medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in Bronx, New York. He completed his neurology residency and fellowship in clinical neurophysiology at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Sydney Hoff very active in 4-H

Bluffton had royalty at this year's Allen County junior fair. Sydney Hoff, daughter of Scott and Brigette Hoff, was named junior fair princess. She is a senior at Bluffton High School.

 She is a member of Beaverdam Bunch 4-H Club and Future Shepherds 4-H Club.

She received the follow awards at this year's county and state fair:

• Mastering Photography – A, First Place, County Plaque Winner, Ohio State Fair Participant

• 2 A ribbons

• Outstanding Livestock Interview

• 1st place Sr. Goat Livestock Interview Judging

Here are Bluffton High School's American Legion Boys and Girls State participants from this summer.

Each student was presented a Good Citizenship Citation from the Bluffton American Legion Post 382 at a recent legion meeting.

Sally Ann Parish, 78, died Aug. 25, 2017, at The Villa at Silverbell Estates in Lake Orion, Michigan.   

She was born on April 5, 193, in Houktown, Ohio, to Carson and Martha (Schnegg) Parish who preceded her in death.

Sally spent her childhood in Bluffton, Ohio. After her marriage to Alex Wolff, she moved to Boyne City, Michigan, where she raised her family. Sally had a Bachelor’s of Art from Aquinas College and also received her LPN degree from Northwestern Michigan College.  She worked as an LPN for Grandvue Medical Center in Michigan.
