 Bluffton University recently held its ninth annual Cabaret for a Cause. The semi-formal event for undergraduates features student performances of songs from a wide genre of musical styles.
 
Each year a different organization is selected to receive the proceeds from ticket sales. This year, a donation of $1,200 was given to Crossroads Crisis Center in Lima.

While many students spend their spring break relaxing with family and friends, students taking part in Bluffton University’s SERVE organization spent the week in the Columbus and Cincinnati regions, working with impoverished families, women’s shelters and area churches.
 

ODOT plans removal of bridges in 2021

Ohio Department of Transportation invites Icon viewers to make public comments on the projected removal of the twin overpasses on Interstate 75 near State Route 103.

A public meeting on the topic is at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 12, in the Bluffton town hall.

The meeting’s legal purposed is described this way by ODOT:

The local art gallery at 323 N. Main St., Blufton, extends hours to:
Wednesdays - 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Thursdays - Noon to 4 p.m.
Fridays - Noon to 4 p.m.
Saturdays - 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Bluffton Family Recreation offers adult swim classes at Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio Maple Crest pool on Augsburger Road, according to Daniel Tinch, BFR executive director.

Here's the class schedule:
• Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays
  9:30-10:15 a.m. - Strength, range of motion and cardio

• Tuesdays and Thursdays
   8:30-9:15 a.m. - Higher level cardio

Proceeds go toward purchase of new equipment

Beaverdam-Richland Township Fire Department will hold an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday, April 7, at the fire department, 201 W. Main St., Beaverdam.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for youth ages 4 to 10, free for youth 3 and under.

The menu includes spaghetti, salad, garlic bread and drink.

Proceeds go to the purchase of new and updated equipment for the department. Tickets are available at the door.

Kristi Hurley second; Lisa Coonfare third out of 102 contestants

The Icon’s Final Four Contest went into double-overtime to pick its winners. The contest asked viewers to pick the winner of the final four teams in the Division I men’s NCAA basketball championship.

Villanova defeated Michigan 79 to 62 in the title game. The Icon contest had 102 entries.

Helen M. Watkins, 95, died at 7:36 a.m., Sunday, April 1, 2018, at Bluffton Hospital. She was born on Sept. 20, 1922, near Columbus Grove, to Walter and Opal (Sharp) Ketner. They preceded her in death.

On Oct. 9, 1942, she married Byron E. Watkins, who preceded in death, Dec. 14, 2002.

Helen is survived two sons, Jerry B. (Susan) Watkins and William D. (Louise) Watkins; two daughters, Wynona M. Wilhelm and Nita S. (Jeff) Hashbarger; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and one sister in-law, Isabella Watkins.

Former Bluffton Mayor Wayne Matter funeral service Friday

Bluffton community leader R. Wayne Matter, 92, died April 2, 2018, at Bluffton Hospital. Wayne was born April 21, 1925, in Bluffton to the late Richard and Josephine (Diemer) Matter. On May 7, 1947, he married Janet Young Matter who preceded him in death on March 18, 2012.
