Transition Bluffton and Johnny Appleseed Park District land stewards program

Join Transition Bluffton and Johnny Appleseed Park District land stewards, Anne Smedley and Austin Roby, for an informative presentation on native and invasive plant species in Bluffton.

The event will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 7:30 p.m. on Zoom.  

Anne and Austin will share information on native plant species that enhance wildlife habitat, including information on seeding and planting. They will also discuss some of the most problematic invasive species found in our area, including techniques for removing these species.  

Spring scheduled announced; first game Feb. 27

Bluffton University announced its Heartland Conference football schedule for the 2020-21 school year.

The seven-game slate kicks off with Rose-Hulman traveling to Salzman Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 27. Below are the dates and opponents for the spring 2021 contests. Start times for all of the HCAC games will be determined.

Pearl Lewandowski wins at third singles

BLUFFTON - The Bluffton girls tennis team lost to visiting Bath 4-1 Wednesday evening. 

The defeat dropped the Lady Pirate net record to 3-8 this season. 

Senior Pearl Lewandowski posted the lone Bluffton triumph. She was victorious at third singles by a 6-3, 6-2 count over Bath sophomore Lexi White.

Nobody else won a set in the match for the Pirates.

Bluffton is scheduled to entertain Archbold Saturday, September 19.

Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is getting ready for winter operations and has a hiring event to fill approximately 65 winter seasonal positions available across the region.

The local hiring event is Tuesday, Oct. 13, from noon to 4:30 p.m. at ODOT District 1 district office, 1885 N. McCullough Street, Lima.

Plowing snow is the primary job responsibility for winter seasonal positions, but employees may also be asked to perform other operational duties. 

Worked for Riley Township and graduated from PGHS in 1984

David Franklin Welty, 54, died suddenly at his residence on Sept. 15, 2020.  David was born on June 24, 1966, at Bluffton Hospital to Franklin and Bonnie (Radabaugh) Welty.  

David was a 1984 graduate of Pandora-Gilboa High School. He was employed as a rural mail carrier for the Pandora Post Office and also worked for Riley Township. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Leipsic. David enjoyed farming, reading and talking with family and friends.

ODOT has a $1.4 million State Route 103 project on its radar

Bluffton officials working with ODOT planners viewed an artist's rendition of what State Route 103 might look like following a 2023 widening project.

The bottom view show SR 103 near County Line Road. The top view shows the road as it approaches Wendy’s Restaurant.

Several observations include:
• a pedestrian path on the south side of the road. It will cross the road in the top view and will connect to the I-75 business district.

Cider press store open daily; corn maze, pumpkin and sunflower patches open weekends

The Pilgrims arrived in rural Bluffton over the weekend.

You may visit them each weekend between now and Nov. 1 at the Suter Produce corn maze, 4678 Road R, Pandora.

Celebrating the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim’s journey on the Mayflower is this year’s corn maze theme, according to Jerry Suter. This is the 21st season for the corn maze, with the first one opening in 1999. Last year’s maze theme celebrated the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.
