Swimming pool open date not yet set

Bluffton council okayed legislation on Monday to permit sidewalk cafes in the village.

The action is specific to a request from the owners of The Greenhorn Restaurant on Vine Street. The owners have requested to allow outdoor dining with food and wine on the menus.

Now that the village established the legislation, the Greenhorn owners need to meet requirements from the Ohio Department of Liquor Control before proceeding with their outdoor plan.

A.C. Burcky and Kathryn Little awards

Bluffton University is recognizing standout senior athletes in men's and women's soccer as the 2021 athletes of the year.

Patrick Spillman of Anderson, Ind., received the 2021 A.C. Burcky Award as outstanding senior male athlete of the year.

Faith Sealscott is the 2021 recipient of the Barbara Fleming Memorial Scholarship sponsored by Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio (MHCO). 

Faith is a 2019 graduate of Allen East High School and attends Ohio Northern University, pursuing a degree in nursing. 

Faith has been working at Willow Ridge for two years. 

This annual award of $500 provides scholarship support to an MHCO employee pursuing a degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse, a Registered Nurse, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a Master’s of Science in Nursing. 

Due to misuse, the Bluffton Police Department has closed its medication drop off box in the town hall.

“We have made the unfortunate decision that we are going to have to stop the unattended use of the medication drop off box in the police department lobby,” said Ryan Burkholder, police chief.

He added:
“We have stressed that loose pills only are allowed to be placed into the box and we still have people that choose to not abide by this.

“Every time it is emptied, our officers have to take out needles, liquids, blister packs, bags, and more.

The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) 2021 Men’s Golf Championship is set to be held at the Hidden Creek Golf Club in Lima, over the course of three days, April 29-May 2..
 
The event is being hosted by Bluffton University and will be contested over three days and will feature 54-holes of competition.
 

Over 200 tagged trout stocked for fishing

The Bluffton Trout Derby is back!

After a one-year absence, those who enjoy fishing can head for the Buckeye and cast nets for more than 200 tagged trout on Sunday, May 2.

Trout number one is worth thousands in cash if caught during derby hours, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The jackpot is built up with $5 donations to a 50/50 drawing.

If caught on derby day, one half of the cash jackpot goes to the angler who catches number one. The other half goes to the person whose raffle ticket is drawn at the end of the derby.

In middle school parking lot - BHS jazz band performing

A senior breakfast returns in May in an outdoor format, according to Greg Denecker, Bluffton school superintendent.

Bluffton schools will host a senior citizen breakfast performance with the BHS jazz band at 8:30 a.m., Friday, May 14, in the Middle School parking lot.

“If we have inclement weather, we will move the event inside the cafetorium with masks and social distancing, said Denecker.

Due to weather-related issues, the ramp closures on U.S. 30 at State Route 235 have been postponed, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The work was originally scheduled for Monday, May 3. The work will be rescheduled for later in the construction season. 

Max Long, VP, Core Administrator and Security Officer at First National Bank is retiring today, April 30. 

Long began his career with First National Bank at the Pandora office in 2018 and has over 35 years of experience in banking.  He has previously worked for Diamond Savings and Loan Company, Bank One Lima, and The Union Bank Co.  

He supported the loan and deposit operations department and was responsible for the core operation system at FNB.  Max and his wife, Theresa, reside in Lima and have two children and one grandchild.
