FINDLAY- If you have a passion for photography or if you want to learn, come along on a hike with fellow photographers to capture the beauty of area parks through the lens of the camera. At this Findlay Hancock Park District event, participants will hike the trails taking photos of scenery, wildlife, plants, and anything else that would make an interesting subject. All skill levels and camera types are welcome.

Nitroglycerin accidents causing deaths in the 1890s

Recently this column revealed that DDT was poured into Riley Creek for nearly 20 years.

An earlier chemical, dangerous for a different reason, killed many persons working on oil rigs in the Bluffton area in the 1890s and 1900s. While the oil boom brought prosperity to Bluffton, it also brought bad news in an extremely dangerous chemical called nitroglycerin. 

Rita Mae Plaugher, 80, passed away March 25, 2023 at Mercy Health-St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima. Rita was born June 22, 1942 in Lima to the late Edwin and Marcilina (Haselman) Palte.

Rita graduated from Beaverdam High School. She was a school bus driver for Bluffton Schools for 30 years. Rita was a member of St. Gerard's Catholic Church, Lima. She had been a very active member of the Allen County 4-H for over 45 years. Rita was known as "Grandma of 4-H" to many and will be extremely missed. She loved the Cincinnati Reds, gambling, going to the casino and playing cards, especially euchre.

Survivors include six children, Teresa (Doug) Griffith of Lima, Tammy (Chuck) Boughan of Lima, Ed  (Susan) Plaugher of Lima, Cathy (John) Lauck of Lima, Janet (Mike) Burgett of Guntown, Mississippi, Jim (Nicole) Plaugher of Waynesfield; fourteen grandchildren, Katelyn Miller, Jarvae Boughan, Trey Boughan, Sarah Kaufman, Tiffany Gray, Clint Strickland, Randy Plaugher, Whitney Kamm, Dustin Lauck, Charlie Patterson, Greg Patterson, Brittany Dickerson, Levi Plaugher, Megan Eutsler; fifteen great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

The Blanchard Valley Health System Auxiliary recently presented a check totaling $200,000 to Myron Lewis, president and chief executive officer of Blanchard Valley Health System, and Karen George, chief development officer of the Blanchard Valley Health Foundation, who accepted it on behalf of their organizations.

The flu vaccine has been shown to reduce the risk of having to go to the doctor (with the flu) by 40 to 60 percent. It has also been proven to help reduce the risk of hospitalization from the flu.

By receiving the flu vaccine, it protects not only you but all the people around you, including the more vulnerable to illness such as infants, young children, the elderly and the immunocompromised community.

The final Wednesday evening Lenten service for 2023 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church will be held at 7:00 p.m. on March 29.

Pastor Bob Krueger from Immanuel Lutheran Church, Findlay, will lead the service under the theme:  "His Final Steps Led to a Fig Tree," based on Mark 11:12-14, 20-25.  The Choir will sing "Day By Day."  Congregational hymns are "Jesus, Refuge of the Weary, Rise, My Soul, to Watch and Pray and God Who Made the Earth and Heaven." 

Storytimes and Tech programs

Join the Putnam County District Library for Ready To Read Storytimes on Tuesdays @ 10 a.m. at the Pandora branch, 118 E Main St.

PCDL Tech programs are made possible through a grant from the State Library of Ohio and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The library is offering free technology help to individuals who need assistance with their smart phone, tablet, iPad etc. Call and set up a 30-minute session with the technology trainers. 

The Apollo Career Center board of education will hold a regular meeting at 7:00 p.m. on March 27. The complete agenda is attached HERE

This public meeting will be held in the Apollo board room, 3325 Shawnee Rd, Lima.

Remember Newsies, the movie? Here's your chance to see Newsies JR live on stage: The Bluffton High School Drama Club will have performances on April 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m., and April 16 at 2:00 p.m. on the Middle School stage. Doors open at 6:30 on Friday an Saturday, and 1:00 on Sunday.
