See Heritage Center construction--the conversion of a Swiss Settlement barn--in progress

June 8 from 1:00-4:00 p.m., at the Schumacher Homestead, 8350 Bixel Rd.

On "Second Saturdays" from June-August, the Schumacher Homestead will be open for special activities and tours of the the air-conditioned farmhouse, as well as the summer kitchen, garden, workshop and barn. Cost: $5 for adults.

On June 8 from 1:00-4:00 p.m., Van Risser will demonstrate and share examples of hearth cooking. During the early years Swiss Settlement cooks used a back fire and pulled hot coals forward under a cast iron pot.

During that time period, cooks needed to control their fire and plan what kind of heat was needed for different tasks—roasting, boiling, frying, stewing, heating water for washing, etc. A steady supply of firewood was essential and was probably logged, cut up, and carried into the house by the men and boys.

On Monday, June 10, at 6:00 p.m. Village council will hold a special public meeting to discuss new funding for Bluffton Safety Services followed by the 7:00 p.m. regular meeting. Both will take place at the EMS building, 115 E. Washington St.

The Friends of the Symphony are holding a fundraiser this summer in support of the Lima Symphony Orchestra. This lighthearted fundraiser, affectionately known as “Flock a Friend,” is a way for symphony supporters--including those who live in Ada--to offer their donations to the symphony in a fun, lighthearted way.

The following ten land transfers took place in the Bluffton Exempted Village School District for the month of May 2024 as reported on the websites of Allen County Auditor Rachael S. Gilroy and Hancock County Auditor Charity A. Rauschenberg.

The Bluffton High School May student of the month is senior Nathan Taylor, the son of Matthew and Stefanie Taylor of Bluffton. 

Taylor is a three time academic letter recipient with a 3.864 GPA. He is an athlete, participating in the Southgate Lanes Youth Bowling League, Miracle League Baseball in Findlay, and Abilities Baseball League in Lima.

He is a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Findlay, and is involved in youth group activities through the church. In his free time, Taylor enjoys watching athletic events, including the Cleveland Browns, Ohio State Buckeyes, Columbus Crew, and Manchester United. Nathan also likes playing golf and video games.

After graduation, Nathan plans to attend Apollo Career Center's Project Search program. 

Gertrude "Trudy" Baber, 102, passed away June 6, 2024, at the Mennonite Memorial Home. 

Gertrude was born March 30, 1922 in Allen County, to Roy and Margurite (Gunther) Laws who preceded her in death. On June 12, 1941 she married Samuel Baber who preceded her in death on August 29, 1997. 

Trudy graduated from Lima South High School and retired from Triplett Corporation in Bluffton. She was a member of the First Missionary Church in Bluffton and the Bluffton Senior Citizens. She also was active at Ebenezer Mennonite Church of Bluffton. Trudy enjoyed volunteering her time at Bluffton Hospital, the Et Cetera Shop and the Hilty Memorial Home.

Blanchard Valley Health System (BVHS) is supporting Bluffton youth in a partnership that provides meals for the Bluffton Family YMCA Summer Day Camp three days each week. Bluffton Hospital dietary associates have made and donated camp meals for four years.
