BLUFFTON - The Bluffton High School girls soccer team defeated local rival Allen East 3-1 in first round Div. V sectional tournament play Tuesday night, October 15, at Steinmetz Field.
The Pirate record improved to 11-5-1 after the victory. It was the second year in a row the Pirates eliminated AE from the tournament at Steinmetz.
Three Bluffton girls were named to the All-Northwest Conference soccer first team in voting recently conducted by the league coaches.
Pirate junior scoring leader Aubrey Burkholder was named first team all-league. Senior teammate Jordan Schweingruber and junior Blair Utendorf were also tabbed as first teamers.
Burkholder has tallied 17 goals and dished out 11 assists to amass 45 points so far this season.
Richard "Rick" A. Thomas, 57, passed away October 15, 2024, at his home.
Rick was born December 17, 1966 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania to Leroy and Betty (Bowman) Thomas. On November 2, 1988 he married Kathy (Bert) Thomas who survives.
Rick was a graduate of Waynesboro High School. He was a journeyman electrician by trade, but he loved fishing and going on nature walks any opportunity that he had. Rick always doted over his grandchildren.
Dan Lee named Coach of the Year; 6 Pirates 1st team all-league, 4 on 2nd team

Bluffton High School senior midfielder Jackson Brauen was named Northwest Conference boys soccer Player of the Year in voting recently conducted by the league coaches.
Bluffton dominated the all-league teams. Six players from the NWC champion Pirates were named first team all-league, while four more made the second squad.
Apollo Career Center customer service programs, which include Spa and Esthetics, Cosmetology and Culinary Arts are preparing to open the doors of their student-run businesses this month.
The Salon and Spa at Apollo will begin customer service on Thursday, October 17, from 11:45 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Normal days of operation are Wednesday-Friday. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome based on availability.

Mayor Rich Johnson presided over the October 14 meeting of the Village of Bluffton Council., which included the passage of a second reading on an ordinance prohibiting keeping roosters, resident comments on parking his semi tractor and the possibility of developing pickleball courts as a Bluffton YMCA-Village collaboration.

Kenneth L. Doty, 72, passed away unexpectedly on October 14, 2024 at Blanchard Valley Hospital, Findlay. Ken was born November 22, 1951 in Bluffton, Ohio to the late Oren and Reva (Habegger) Doty. On October 25, 1975 he married Kathy Dilsaver Doty and she survives.
Donald "Curly" Keith Basinger, 91, peacefully went home to Jesus on Friday, October 11, 2024 at Mennonite Memorial Home in Bluffton, Ohio.
Don was born on December 9, 1932 in a log cabin in Pandora, to Gerald and Lela (Oberly) Basinger. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ruby Mae (Geiger) Basinger.
They have three children, Cindy (Tim) Luginbill, Deb Howell, and Todd (Kim) Basinger, all living in the Pandora area.
