He plans to attend Xavier and major in accounting

Derek Swartzlander, Bluffton High School senior, is the May BHS student of the month.

He is a member of the BHS band, cross country team, track team, academic team and is in drama club. He attends St. Mary's Catholic Church.

In his spare time he likes to play the guitar and write. For post secondary options he took classes at Bluffton University including Calculus I, Accounting I and II.  He also took Introduction to Sociology from the University of Findlay. And, with Jamie Erford, he took College Writing. After graduation he will attend Xavier and major in Accounting.

West Elm Street project is one step closer to completion.

Hohenbrink Contractors will begin paving the street on Friday, according to Bryan Lloyd, assistant village administrator.

He told the Icon that the contractor will apply the base course Friday and final course on Monday.

Laura Ewing has accepted a new position

The village of Bluffton has an opening for a fiscal officer. Mayor Richard Johnson has accepted the resignation of Laura Ewing, fiscal officer, who has accepted a new position.

Her last day will be May 24, according to Jesse Blackburn, village administrator.

Ewing was hired as fiscal officer on Sept. 6, 2017. She replaced Nancy Kindle, who resigned on Aug. 14. Kindle was village fiscal officer from 2006 to 2017.

Several Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce members have events planned this spring.

PromoHits! is taking nominations for their PromoCares charitable giving program using this form or by visiting www.promohitsltd.com. One charity each from the Bluffton, Lima, Findlay and Toledo communities will be chosen. Online nominations will be accepted through May 17.

A Bluffton Pirate youth basketball camp is scheduled for Monday through Thursday, June 3 to 6 in the Bluffton HS gym, according to Todd Boblitt.

Session 1, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., is for boys in first, second and third grades.

Session 2, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., is for boys in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

The cost is $30 per camper. Additional details are on the flyer below. A printer-friendly registration form is in the attachment below.

 

Caleb Mikesell plans to attend Bluffton University in the fall

Caleb Mikesell is the April Bluffton High School student of the month. A senior, Caleb is a member of Drama Club, Jazz band and Pep band.

He enjoys cooking and in his spare time he likes to go biking and hang out with his friends.

For post secondary options he attended Bluffton University and took Sociology, Calculus and Psychology. After graduation he wants to continue his education at Bluffton University and would like to earn a degree in Early Childhood Education.

Caleb is the son of David and Amy Mikesell of Bluffton and has a 3.884 grade point average.
