Letter: The Bill Garrett I knew

A letter from Icon founder Fred Steiner.

On June 6 a most memorable village personality left us. Bill Garrett, 1968 Bluffton High School graduate and long-time resident of the Riley Street neighborhood, died at Mennonite Memorial Home where he had lived for several years. A memorial service will be set at a later date, and I only learned of his death yesterday.

Bill was a part of the rich fabric of characters who stand out when the roll call of our most interesting residents are celebrated. Although not a village mover or shaker, he was a surprising person of letters, and his interest in world history was outstanding.

For those of us who knew him, much of this is common knowledge. For those who didn’t know him, here’s a glimpse of what you missed.

Swiss House event to feature "scherenschnitte"

The Swiss Community Historical Society will hold its next Second Saturday event on July 13, from 1-4:00 p.m., at the Schumacher Homestead, 8350 Bixel Road, Bluffton.

Village of Bluffton to hold annual budget hearing on July 8

The Village of Bluffton Council will hold its Annual Budget Hearing to discuss the proposed 2025 Tax Budget. The hearing will be held on July 8, 2024 at 7:45 p.m. The hearing will be held at the Town Hall and is open to the public.

The Quarry Farm News/Summer 2024 has arrived with listings of programs during July-October.

Bluffton University and University of Findlay to host BioBlitz 2024

Bioblitz 2024 will be a collaborative effort of Bluffton University and the University of Findlay aimed at exploring and documenting the rich biodiversity within their respective nature preserves. Scheduled for July 13, 2024, from 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., volunteers and community members are invited to join faculty experts in the day-long exploration of local ecosystems.

The event will begin at the Rieck Center for Habitat Studies, located at 17311 TR 166, Mount Blanchard, Ohio, then proceed to Spurgat Land Conservancy, located at CR 79 and CR 59, Rawson, Ohio, culminating at the Bluffton University Nature Preserve, located at 10625 Augsburger Road, Bluffton, Ohio. A reception at the Moyer Center will conclude the day, providing participants with an opportunity to share findings and experiences.
