Daniel Rumer was a former BHS principal and Bluffton school board member
Daniel F. Rumer, 64, died July 26, 2010, in Findlay, Ohio, of pancreatic cancer. Born Oct. 31, 1945, and raised in Lima, he was a Bath High School graduate, and went on to play football and graduate from Bluffton College in 1967 and St. Francis College in 1971.
Mr. Rumer is survived by his wife, Linda, and they were married for 45 years. They raised three children. The family lived in Bradford, England, for a year while Dan participated in a Fulbright teacher exchange program.
As an educator for more than 35 years at Bath High School and Bluffton High School., he was a history teacher, guidance counselor, principal and school board member.
He was also a coach, juvenile probation officer, and mentor to the youth in northwest Ohio.
Mr. Rumer was frequently seen at sporting events in Bluffton or southeast Indiana, attending and cheering for the grandchildren. He was was an avid historian, NASCAR race fan and fisherman. He loved to travel North America in pursuit of his interests.
He is survived by his wife, Linda (Obenour) Rumer, Bluffton; children, Christine and Bill Gable, Bluffton, Tony and Jill Rumer, Bluffton, Natalie and Todd Koch, West Harrison, Ind.; grandchildren Drew Gable, Ashlin Gable, Adrian Rumer, Brandon Koch, Bret Rumer, Abigail Koch and Averey Rumer.
He is the son of Shirley (Rumer) Reineke, Lima, brother to Michael Rumer, Lima, and Elizabeth and George Hostetler, Bluffton.
He was preceded in death by father Eugene C. Rumer, and father-in-law, Paul E. Obenour.
Visitation will be held at Chiles-Laman Funeral Home, Bluffton, Wednesday, from 2 to 8 pm.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, 10:30 a.m. at Bluffton Presbyterian Church. Interment and graveside service will follow the memorial service at the Woodland Cemetery, Beaverdam.
