Pirate volleyball sweeps Elida

ELIDA __ The visiting Bluffton High School volleyball team decisively defeated non-league foe Elida in straight sets on Tuesday, August 27.

The Pirates downed Elida 25-15, 25-11, 25-15.

The sweep improved the Pirate record to 5-1 this season.

Ayla Grandey topped Bluffton with 13 kills.

Kendall Stackhouse knocked down seven kills, and Libby Hocanson added six kills. She also compiled two blocks and a pair of aces. 

Gracie Yarnell passed out 25 assists and she fired two aces.

Pirate girls soccer dominates Bearcats

SPENCERVILLE __The visiting Bluffton High School girls soccer team blanked Spencerville 5-0 in the Northwest Conference opener on August 27.

Bluffton scored two goals in less than a minute early on and never was threatened.

The two-time defending league champion Pirate girls improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the NWC with the lopsided road win.

Spencerville fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the NWC after the defeat.

Blair Utendorf started the scoring with a goal in the seventh minute off a Mya McDougle assist.

Gloria N. Hofferbert worked at Taco Bell

Gloria N. Hofferbert, 37, passed away August 23, 2024, at Lima Memorial Health System.

Gloria was born April 2, 1987 in Lima to Gregory (Greg) and Emma (Hughes) Hofferbert who survive.

She was a graduate of Fairfield High School, a member of Waynesfield Baptist Church and was currently employed at Taco Bell. 

She is survived by her mother, Emma Hofferbert of Lima; father, Gregory (Greg) Hofferbert of Lima; son, Charlie Taylor of Lima; and two brothers, Jonathan Hofferbert of Lima, Greg Hofferbert, Jr. of Lima.

Bill Herr taught high school mathematics and science for 32 years. Next, he served as chaplain at a nursing home for 24 years. In this column, he returns to a favorite subject, Bluffton sports.

What is the greatest Bluffton High School football team ever? A very interesting read is "A Century of Pirates," a compilation of stories, photographs and records of Bluffton High School championship athletic teams and players of the 20th century. Included are photos and player names of 20 outstanding football teams that played between 1929 to 1998. Fred Steiner compiled this amazing record. It is a treasure to read for those that follow Pirate sports.
