Molly Lengyel hits homer and has 2 RBIs as Lady Pirates smash Leipsic 11-1
A little bit of sunshine is all it took to get the Lady Pirates another W in the win column. BHS defeated Leipsic 11-1 earlier this week.
After three postponed games (Pandora-Gilboa, Liberty Benton, and Allen East), the Pirates were back on the offensive hosting Leipsic in non-conference play.
The Pirates started off slow with only one hit by Molly Lengyel and scoring only Shannon McKamey in the first inning. The Viking defense locked the Pirates in a 1-1 tie until the fourth inning.
Mariah Welch started off the inning with a base hit, but the Vikings held fast throwing out the next two Pirate batters. Welch was able to score after a stolen base and a passed ball.
The Pirates added two base runners on walks, Kayla Longworth and Briana Laing. McKamey quickly brought both runners home with a single. Ashlin Gable and Lengyel continued the two out rally, Gable blasting an RBI double, and Lengyel crushing an out of the park two run homer, putting the Pirates up 7-1.
The Pirates defense continued solid play with an amazing relay from center fielder McKamey to Laing at 2nd who completed the out to Adrian Rumer at 3rd, picking off the batter and shutting down any late Leipsic hopes.
The Pirates tallied another run in the fifth inning on a single by Alexis Lugibihl. Needing only three runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early the Pirates rose to the challenge with Gable and Lengyel leading the way with singles.
The Vikings battled back with a fly out and a strike out, placing the Pirates in another two out pinch with runners in scoring position. Katie Palte was able to drive in Gable and Lengyel with a hard hit single to center field. Palte quickly stole two bases and Luginbihl brought her home with a game ending single making the final score 11-1.
Kayla Longworth earned the win on the mound for the Pirates bringing her to 3-3 for the season, fanning 4 Viking batters and walking 1. The Pirates allowed just 3 hits while racking up 13.
The Pirates host Pandora-Gilboa Wednesday at home in a make up game, and Ada at home on Thursday.
