The sweetest job

Attention alumni of Suter's Produce. Does this scene look familiar? The crew just now (7:45 a.m.) came in from the field from where they started picking sweet corn at 6 a.m. The bags of corn are loaded on trucks to be sent to those red barn stands across Allen, Putnam, Hancock, Hardin counties and beyond.

Next time you see Gary Kirtland, ask him about the 1954 Ford he bought from Conner Stewart

Gary Kirtland says he bought his first car at age 15. Conner Stewart sold him the car. At the time Stewart owned a Sohio gas station at the corner of Main and Jefferson Streets (now owned by Kirtland).

“I told my dad that I wanted this car – a 1954 Ford – and I bought it,” said Gary. Stewart let Gary park the car on his Sohio lot.

Since he wasn’t old enough to drive, after school he’d go start it, rev up the engine and mess around with it. He eventually blew the engine simply by revving it up too much.

Golf scramble raises nearly $10,000 for Beaver athletics

Bluffton University’s 17th annual Alumni and Friends Golf Scramble raised roughly $9,400 for university athletics through TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) Bluffton.

Harrod’s Colonial Golfers Club hosted the July 19 event, which drew 108 golfers from Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Arizona, Florida and South Carolina.

The winners of the scramble received monetary prizes. The three-man team of alumni Gary Jones ’72 of Columbus Grove, Tom Baratko ’72 of Springboro and Denny Lane ’70 of Bellefontaine took first place.

Kirtland's Auto prepares for final oil change and all vehicle repair; will focus entirely on car sales

Area vehicle owners take note: Effective July 31 Kirtland’s Auto Repair, 302 N. Main St., will no longer repair vehicles.

Kirtland’s Auto Sales, in the same location, will continue to sell automobiles. Gary Kirtland has owned the business since 1985.

In other words: Kirtland’s is out of the repair business – but remains in the car sales business.

Up to now 10 percent of the business has been car sales and 90 percent repair. “We want to see it at 100 percent car sales,” said Kirtland.

School board acts on $14,058,262 appropriations for 2014-15

Bluffton school board will act on approval of $14,058,262 appropriations for 2014-15 at Monday night's July school board session.

Town hall, Sunset Drive updates provided at Monday's council meeting

Bluffton council will hear several updates on village projects from Jamie Mehaffie, village administrator, during Monday’s council meeting. A summary of those updates follow. The complete council agenda is in an attachment at the bottom of this story.

Town Hall
According to the village insurance adjustor, he will submit the file to the insurance carrier this week. Supposedly, we should have a response in seven to 10 days.
