Bluffton Boy Scouts only troop in district to earn Year of Celebration badge

Court of Honor

Bluffton Boy Scout Troop 256 held their Court of Honor on Feb. 5 at the First Mennonite Church. The event is held to recognize Scout rank advancements, and both merit badges and other badges earned since the last Court of Honor, which was held Labor Day 2010.

During the past six months, 15 Scouts earned rank advancements. The advancements ranged from brand new Scouts earning their Scout rank, to several older Scouts achieving their Eagle rank. Eagle is the highest rank possible within the Boy Scouts of America.

Congressman Jim Jordan to address the Bluffton/Pandora Rotary Club Feb. 24

Rep. Jim Jordan

Fourth District Congressman Jim Jordan will address the Bluffton/Pandora Rotary Club at 7:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 24, in the third floor of the town hall.

The public is invited to attend and breakfast will be provided without charge.

Bluffton senior performs vocal recital Feb. 13

Brian Timpe, a vocalist from Swanton, will present his Bluffton University senior recital at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, in Yoder Recital Hall on the Bluffton campus. The recital is free and open to the public; a reception will follow in the lobby.

Timpe, a tenor and a student of Dr. Crystal Sellers, assistant professor of music at Bluffton, will perform numbers by Alessandro Scarlatti, Henri Duparc, Robert Schumann and Benjamin Britten. Providing accompaniment will be pianist Allison Ringold.

Lamar Nisly to discuss his new book Feb. 16

Dr. Lamar Nisly, professor of English at Bluffton University, will present a program Feb. 16 on his recently published book, "Wingless Chickens, Bayou Catholics and Pilgrim Wayfarers: Constructions of Audience and Tone in O'Connor, Gautreaux and Percy."

The event, also including a reception, is free and open to the public beginning at 4 p.m. in the Musselman Library Reading Room on the Bluffton campus. Nisly will also sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase.

Police attempted to stop a vehicle near the intersection of County Line Rd and E. Elm St. The vehicle fled the scene and drove through a couple yards on Eastland Dr. at which time the driver left the area on foot. The case is pending in Lima Municipal Court.

A Beaverdam resident reported that an unknown person had keyed her vehicle while it was parked overnight at a Grove St. residence.

"Ship Breaker," teen book discussion topic on Feb. 24

A teen book discussion will be held at Bluffton Public Library on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 4 p.m.

"We'll be reading the 2011 Michael L. Printz Award winner, 'Ship Breaker,' by Paolo Bacigalupi," said Youth Services Coordinator Rikki Steingass. "The Printz Award is given to the best young adult book of the year." The book discussion will be held in the Youth Activity Room at the library. Snacks will be provided.
