Volleyball: Marietta handles Bluffton a loss

The Beavers were on the wrong end of a third straight 3-0 setback against Marietta during the second match of day two at the Sommer Center Spiketacular.
The offense was commanded by Brooke Ruffer (Stryker) with 19 assists. MacKenzie McFarlin (Ashland), Adrienne Shepard (Arlington) and Kendra Parmenter (Grove City) had seven, six and six kills, respectively. Jenny Brown (St. Marys/Memorial) added three solo blocks and two block assists for Bluffton. The Beaver defense was led by Hailey Phillips (Malinta/Patrick Henry) with 10 digs.
Alma College saw the best effort of the weekend from the Beavers before Bluffton fell in four sets. Parmenter and Brown had 10 and nine kills, respectively. Ruffer had 29 assists and was backed defensively by McFarlin and Phillips with 12 and 10 digs. Brown added one solo block and five block assists for the match.
In other matches, Hope defeated Marietta in three and Alma defeated Bethany in a grueling five-set battle during the first matches of the day. Bethany then took down Case in four before Hope dispatched Case in straight sets.
Bluffton’s JV returns to the Sommer Center on Monday evening at 7 p.m. against OSU-Lima. The varsity gets back to action next at Indiana Wesleyan's tournament on September 6 and 7.
