Feb. 14 university blood drive collects 33 units

By Caitlin Nearhood, university intern
You know it’s a successful blood drive when it collects enough blood to save almost one hundred lives.

On Feb. 14, Bluffton University hosted a blood drive sponsored by the American Red Cross in the Sommer Center. The Red Cross set a goal to collect 30 units of blood throughout the day.

By the end, 33 units of blood were collected -in other words, 99 lives were saved that day, according the Office of Student Involvement’s Facebook page.

Tricia Latimer, a sophomore pre-medicine major from Troy, Ohio, gave blood for the first time Friday and didn’t mind it.

“It wasn’t a horrible thing, it’s a healthy thing,” Latimer said.

Latimer said that it was a “random choice” to give blood that day and that she has always wanted to give blood, but not making the weight limit and a low iron count stood in her way in the past.

“I wanted to experience it - it’s a good thing,” she said.

Latimer also said that it wasn’t what thought it would be. “I expected to be more queasy, honestly. But it went quickly, like I barely noticed that it happened,” she said. “It was a good time.”

The free beverages and food made things better too, according to Latimer.Disappointed that you missed this last blood drive? A  second campus blood drive will occur sometime in April.
