ADA, Ohio - The Bluffton University volleyball team jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead over host Ohio Northern on Wednesday, Sept. 16, but the Polar Bears scored 13 of the next 17 points and parlayed that into a four-set win over the Beavers. Bluffton slipped to 3-6 against some of the best competition in the nation, while Ohio Northern upped its season mark to 6-3.
The Polar Bears dominated set two, going up 23-14 before the visitors scored four in a row to make the final look more respectable at 25-18. A back-and-forth third set saw Bluffton down 19-16, but five straight Beaver markers turned the tide as Bluffton held off Northern 25-22, forcing a fourth set. A 13-6 deficit in the clincher proved too much to overcome despite a five-point run that helped the Beavers pull within two at 14-12. ONU closed out the night with a 25-20 victory in the King Horn Center.
Senior Kendra Parmenter (Grove City) led all hitters with 20 kills for a .318 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Jenny Brown (St. Marys/Memorial), who went over 1,000 career kills at Colorado College last weekend, put down 11 kills against the Polar Bears.
Sophomore libero Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Catholic) picked up a team-high 26 digs, just one shy of her career high, while freshman setter Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) notched a double-double with 11 digs and 35 assists. Junior captain Lauren Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) stuffed ONU with six blocks and she just missed out on double digits with nine digs.
Bluffton will suit up again in just two days when the women travel to the College of Wooster Kilt Classic. The Beavers open with Muskingum at 3:30 PM before a 7:30 matchup with Pitt-Bradford.
