Bluffton splits on day one at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio - On day one of the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic, the Beavers opened with the host team, The College of Wooster Fight Scots. The Beavers dropped the first two sets (27-25 and 25-21). Bluffton battled back to claim sets three and four by identical 25-19 scores. The visitors trailed 10-5 in the clincher and fought back for a 16-15 lead before getting tripped up with a chance to close it out. Wooster took advantage, capping off the victory with a 19-17 win in the fifth.
Leading the Beavers with 18 kills was MacKenzie McFarlin (Ashland) and she was closely followed by her teammates Lauren Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) and Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North) with 17 and 11 kills, respectively. Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) dished out 55 assists and also picked up 13 digs. Libero Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Catholic) finished with 16 digs. Sophomore Abby Rohrbach (New Knoxville) and McFarlin chipped in with 14 and 12 digs, while Courtney Zimpfer (Jackson Center) tallied 11 pickups. Becca Tourney (Columbia City, Ind.) knocked down 10 kills.
The Beavers had a short break and returned to face Franciscan University. Bluffton responded to their opening loss at the hands of Wooster with a three-set demolition of the Barons (25-15., 25-18, 25-17). Setting the pace for the Beavers was floor general Erin Weisgarber with 30 assists and a perfect seven kills on seven attacks. MacKenzie McFarlin and Bethany Martini chipped in with nine and seven kills, respectively. Defensively, Courtney Zimpfer (five digs) and Sydney Mohler (four digs) led the way. Bluffton improved to 7-4 on the season.
The Beavers will be back in action Saturday in Timken Gymnasium, facing Capital University at 10 a.m. and Marietta College at 12 p.m.
