BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University softball team welcomed the Adrian College Bulldogs for a Friday double-header on March 24. The teams came out fighting offensively as Bluffton took the first game, 15-12. The Beavers capped the sweep with a much different output as the final score was 3-0 in game two. The two wins for the home team pushed the Beavers to 10-4 overall. Adrian dropped to 2-12 on the season.
Bluffton jumped on top with four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run double from CAYLIN MORSTADT (Delaware/Rutherford B. Hayes). The Bulldogs answered back and then some in the top of the third with nine runs.
The Beavers trimmed Adrian’s lead to 9-7 after scoring three runs thanks to a JESSIE MADZIA (Massillon/Tuslaw) RBI single, a wild pitch and a fielding error. Bluffton would take a 12-9 advantage in the bottom of the fourth. The Beavers exploded with a two-run double by JOSIE McELROY (Mt. Orab/Western Brown) and RBIs from MAKENZIE SCHMIDT (Caledonia/River Valley), BRITTANY HUFF (Clayton/Northmont) and KELSEY REEDER (Galion/Northmor).
The Bulldogs would pull within one, 12-11, heading to the bottom of the sixth before Bluffton punched home three more runs in the bottom of the frame on the strength of home runs by Brittany Huff and Caylin Morstadt, who launched her first collegiate long ball! Adrian added one run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Beavers took game one, 15-12.
Leading the way for the home team was Caylin Morstadt who went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Jessie Madzia was perfect at the plate as the junior smacked three hits, got a sacrifice bunt down and notched an RBI. Brittany Huff had a team high four RBI to go along with her two hits.
Securing the win for the Beavers was NICOLE THOMAS (Tontogany/Otsego) who improved to 3-2 on the year. Thomas went four innings, allowing nine hits with only one earned run.
Bluffton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as CARLY LEVINDOFSKE (Brunswick/Magnificat) walloped a triple down the right field line, picking up Caylin Morstadt from second. Bluffton added another run off an RBI single from MERCEDES BURNS (Ashtabula/Edgewood). An RBI base hit by Jessie Madzia scored Burns, making it 3-0 after two innings. Madzia had all she needed as Adrian was off balance throughout game two.
Madzia went 2-for-4 with a run. Caylin Morstadt chipped in with two safeties, making the freshman 5-of-8 for the afternoon!
Dealing on the mound was Jessie Madzia who fired a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Madzia needed only 89 pitches to seal the deal.
Bluffton will head right back into action on Saturday morning as they face their second MIAA opponent in as many days, Albion, for a double-header with the first pitch set to go at 9 a.m.
