Late Lady Pirate goal beats Falcons
By Cort Reynolds
BLUFFTON - The Bluffton girls soccer team scored in the 69th minute to break a tie and defeat visiting Riverdale 2-1 Saturday night at Steinmetz Field.
Their second straight victory lifted the Lady Pirate record to 3-2-1.
Laykin Garmatter scored the game's first goal in the 17th minute on an assist from Lauren Rhodes to put Bluffton in front, 1-0.
But Riverdale's Lexi Miller tied it up a minute later with a goal.
The score stayed 1-1 until Rhodes found the back of the net for the eventual game-winner off a feed from Clara Matthews with just over 10 minutes left to play.
The Pirate defense kept the Falcons scoreless over the final 61 minutes to post the victory.
Bluffton put seven of its 12 shots on goal, while six of the 11 Riverdale shots were on target.
Pirate keeper Julia Mehaffie made five saves. Riverdale goalie Keyliana Miller was also credited with five stops.
Bluffton (2-0 NWC) hosts league rival Delphos Jefferson (1-3-1, 0-1-1 NWC) Monday, September 14 at 7 p.m. on the Steinmetz Field pitch.
