Beavers rally for 5-set win over Defiance
The Bluffton University volleyball team walked away with a five-set win over rival Defiance College on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021. The Beavers moved to 10-17 overall and 2-6 in the Heartland Conference, while Defiance fell to 4-15 and 1-7 in the HCAC.
With Bluffton trailing 8-2 in the clinching set, a Cassidy Posey (Paulding) kill set the stage for a monumental comeback. Posey smacked two more hammers with sophomore Lindsey Shaw (Findlay/Van Buren) at the service line before junior Courtney Weekley (Butler/Clear Fork) took center stage. Weekley ran off nine consecutive serves, including three aces, as the Beavers went on a 13-1 run for the 15-9 victory in set five!
Posey took no prisoners against her former team, walloping the Jackets with 18 kills while hitting .255 for the night. Maddie White (Ashland), who dished out 24 assists, checked in with eight kills, eight digs and four blocks. Freshman Chloei Barnett (Wapakoneta) came off the bench with seven kills and Kaylie Campbell (Camden/Preble Shawnee) chimed in with six winners.
Brooke Kleman (Glandorf/Ottawa/Glandorf) racked up a season-high 35 digs on Wednesday night! She also fired a career-high six aces at Bluffton's favorite rival. Elle Price (Pocono Pines, PA/Findlay) put together a double-double with 18 assists and 15 digs. Weekley added 13 digs to her three fifth-set aces. Sophomore Alysha Like (McComb) stuffed DC with a career-best eight blocks.
Bluffton will head to Richmond, Ind., for a 1 p.m. meeting with HCAC-leading Earlham College on Saturday, Oct. 30, in the 2021 regular-season finale.
