Pirate wrestling 3rd at county meet; Basil wins 175 crown

Tournament host Bluffton High School finished a strong third at the 10-team Allen County Invitational wrestling tournament Friday, December 22.
Shawnee narrowly won the team title with 256 points to edge Allen East by a single point.
The youthful Pirate wrestlers came in third with 179 points.
Mustang freshman wrestler Jordan Neal won the 144 lbs. weight class title and was named tournament MVP. He posted a 5-0 mark with three pins at the event.
Pirate senior Kyle Basil rose from the fourth seed to win the 175 lbs. crown. He pinned top seed Jameson Wicker of Lima Senior in the third round at 3:20 to win Pool A in preliminary action.
Basil pinned Allen East senior Nick Zellmann in the semifinals of the tournament to advance to the title match.
Basil won his championship round bout by a 10-7 decision over Shawnee’s second-seeded Drew Neidemire. Basil went 5-0 on the day with four pins.
Bluffton freshman Mason Shank took second at 215, and five other Pirates took third in their respective weight brackets.
Shank went 2-0 to win Pool B, and then pinned sophomore Caden Falke of LCC in the semifinals at 3:12.
Shank then lost by pin at 2:11 to AE’s Brogan Paxson in the 215 lbs. championship round. Shank was 3-1 in the event with three pins.
Pirate freshman Branden Cross defeated Indian Donovyn Campbell 5-1 in the 120 lbs. division third-place match. Cross fashioned a 3-2 record at the event.
Bluffton sophomore Micah Rehm won his 144 lbs. third-place bout with a 5-2 decision over Austin Shafer of Delphos St. John’s. He won two of his four matches.
At 150 lbs., Pirate freshman Kizer Young pinned Christian Young of DSJ at 4:25. Young went 2-2 with two pins at the tourney.
Sophomore Evan Grothause won a 7-3 decision over Camden Gable of DSJ at 165 lbs. to finish third. He won four of his five matches but lost to the eventual runner-up.
Pirate junior Ethan Kohli defeated Javier Franco 1-0 in the 190 lbs. third-place bout. He went 3-1 on the day with a pin.
Bluffton sophomore Braylon Goings came in sixth in the 285 lbs. division, going 2-2 at the event.
