As the Bluffton area prepares for the Relay for Life event on Friday, June 20, downtown businesses are showing their support.

The Relay planning committee has hung shoes above store fronts. Purple is the official color for this year’s theme: Believe.

The shoes remind everyone of the battle that cancer patients face each day while fighting this disease.  The Relay for Life event format encourages everyone to “walk a mile in support of cancer research.”

Youth entering grades 2-7 can learn the basic skills of tennis through a three-day camp at BFR Sports & Fitness, according to Carole Enneking, director. Camp dates are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 9-11.

The camp sessions will be held indoors at BFR from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.  Students with little or no prior instruction will learn the basic forehand, backhand and overhead strokes.

Dancers Elite will present its 34th annual recital, "Follow Your Dream," on Friday and Saturday, June 6-7, according to Debbie Garlock.

Performances are in the Bluffton Middle School and begin at 7 p.m.

This year's theme is "By The Sea." It features students from the Bluffton area as well as Ada, Cory-Rawson, Pandora, Mt. Blanchard, Findlay and Lima. Tickets are $7 for ages 3 and up. Youth ages 2 and younger are free.

Following the announcement from the American Cancer Society that they would no longer include Bluffton as an official Relay for Life event, a local planning committee chose to develop an independent event.  In an effort to control administrative costs, the American Cancer Society of Northwest Ohio has chosen to consolidate Relay for Life events into large county-wide programs. The Bluffton planning committee voted to continue the annual summer event as a third-party event in support of cancer research.

A 2 p.m. program features the performance by an alphorn quartet from Columbus.

The Schumacher homestead, 8350 Bixel Road, will have an open house beginning at 3 p.m.

The Bluffton Area Relay for Life will be held on June 20 and 21 at Bluffton University Salzman Stadium. The events begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 20 and conclude at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 21.
