Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) breakfast meetings resumed on Sept. 14, with a presentation by Bluffton High School biology teacher Scott Hoff on the Ocean Focus class and field experience in the Florida Keys.
Hoff showed how students learn fundamental aspects of marine science as well as discover what they can do to improve the health of our oceans.
Local artist Oscar Velasquez is exhibiting several of his paintings at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton, through September. Most people know Velasquez, a Pandora native, as a painter of large murals on area buildings.
His works at MMH include landscapes, flowers and scenes familiar to the region. The exhibit is located on the third floor, near the Chapel. Paintings attached are titled “Lake View” and “Three Peasant Girls.”
American Red Cross volunteer Steve Mahler of Rawson is being deployed to Durham, N.C., as part of the Red Cross response to Hurricane Florence. Mahler will be serving with the Disaster Assessment team.
This is his third recent deployment. In July, Steve deployed to Des Moines, Iowa, serving as a Recovery specialist following flooding in the city. He then deployed to Marshalltown, Iowa, after a tornado struck the community as part of the Disaster Assessment team.
Mahler will be leaving from Toledo Express Airport early Sept. 13 for a two week deployment.
