FROM ADA ICON - History buffs and artists will be especially interested in the public unveiling of a painting on a barn in Hardin County. Scott Hagan, the man who painted each of the 88 Ohio Bicentennial barns, is completing one of Jacob Parrott, the first Medal of Honor recipient in the U.S. for his service in the Civil War.

The unveiling will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday on a barn owned by Arthur and Charlene Bingham at 19691 US 68 south of Kenton.  The barn is located two miles north of the Hardin-Logan County line.

MHCO seeking to add drivers to its group of medical transport volunteers

If you are 21 or older and like to drive, Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio has a rewarding volunteer opportunity for you.

MHCO is seeking to add drivers to its group of medical transport volunteers. The time commitment is flexible, and driving is only for medical transports. Trips are made Monday through Friday and are typically from Bluffton to the Findlay/Lima area.

According to Jessica Strahm, volunteer coordinator, MHCO provides well-maintained small buses and a mini-van for the transport of its elders who use scooters or are in wheelchairs.

Bill Gaines, who helped bring soccer to Bluffton, was remembered on Sept. 25 during the Bluffton HS boys’ versus Ada soccer match.

Gaines died July 8. He was a soccer coach in the Bluffton schools for many years. The recognition took place during halftime of the varsity contest.

Amber Shough is the winner of two passes to the Shannon Theatre. She correctly identified the location of this clock face, posted last week on the Icon. Her name was drawn from the list of correct entries in that contest.

The clock is located in the children's section of the Bluffton Public Library. Watch for the next Icon contest coming later this week.

During America in Bloom ceremony in Lexington, Kentucky

Steve Stratton, of Stratton Greenhouses, was recognized during the 2018 America in Bloom award ceremony on Sept. 29 in Lexington, Kentucky.

He was among 16 candidates nominated by candidate communities for the John R. Holmes III Community Champion Award.

This award goes to a person who goes above and beyond for their community to make their town more livable. Steve launched the downtown Bluffton petunia flower pots project and several additional flower beautification activities in the community over the years.

Annalise Nisly, a Bluffton High School junior, is the Bluffton Icon's student artist of the month.

She has taken  Art one, ceramics one and ceramics two.

" I enjoy ceramics because working with clay in my hands is calming and therapeutic to me," she said.  "I especially like this project because I have a lot of creative freedom and I get to be working on one of the most fascinating ecosystems on the earth: the coral reef."

Here plans after high school include college, but specific plans are undecided. Vickie Garmon is the Bluffton HS art teacher.
