Bluffton Lions keeps an eye out for people with vision needs

Bluffton Lions Club keeps an eye out for people with vision needs.

Bluffton Lions Club members Ed Yeager (in the photo) along with  Barbara Plaugher transported over 9,000 pairs of glasses from the collection address near Bellefontaine to the Pandora sorting center in July.

Dennis Morrison assisted with transport of glasses in May from Germantown to the sorting center.

Dan Diller helped with the transport in June from Ashland collection area also to Pandora. These glasses collected from Lion’s clubs around the state are then processed for third-world missions.

With well over 40 entries, this photo struck a cord with Icon viewers. The cord struck by Derek Dukes was out-of-tune, and is the winner with several "atonal"** entries.

He offered three winning captions, plus one special mention, which follow:
• The winner: It's the longest socks I could find!
• Second place: Duct tape and garbage bags might not have been the best building materials.
• Honorable mention: I can't wait for the football players to Superfan for the golf team next year.
• Special mention: Can you letter for being a Superfan?

Kriss Heiks diagnosed with rare form of cancer

Kriss Heiks, a 1973 graduate of Bluffton High School and 1978 graduate of Bluffton College (University), now living in Boone, N.C., was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that settled in the sinus cavity in the left side of her face.

According to Heiks, essentially the entire left side of her face was removed, including her eye, jaw and nostril.

Reconstruction surgery was performed, but failed due to a problem with her blood vessels, so she expects to undergo radiation, followed by being fitted for a facial prosthetic.

Bluffton Lions Club working behind the scenes

Despite not being able to hold in-person meetings at the moment, Bluffton’s Lions Club continues to work behind the scenes in several efforts in the community.

Here’s an update from the current Lions newsletter of club activities related to recycling:

• A load of batteries was taken to a  area recycling location by Brandon Matthews.

• Ed Yeager took 23 pairs of hearing aids to the Findlay Hearing Center. They were extremely grateful and said there a backlog of hospice patients in need of hearing aids.
