New CT scanner improves Bluffton Hospital care for stroke patients

Bluffton Hospital, a division of Blanchard Valley Health System, has acquired a new Siemens Go Top 128-slice computerized tomography (CT) scanner.

The scanner is significantly faster than the one it replaces and offers enhanced technology. The unit also improves the care of stroke patients. Bluffton Hospital is an accredited stroke center.

Library holiday closings, COVID tests available

November 7 garden club meeting

CORRECTION: This meeting begins at 6:00 p.m.

The November meeting of the Gardeners of the Bluffton-Pandora Area will take place at 6:00 p.m. on November 7 at the Bluffton Public Library, 145 S. Main., Bluffton. 

The topic is "Fall & Winter Gardening Variety Pack." Learn which perennial plants can still be split, how to plant spring bulbs like tulips, daffodils, iris, and which plants you can start in the middle of winter from hardwood cuttings and using milk jugs to start perennial seeds in the snow.

Jingle Bell Stroll introduced on November 16

Get ready to kick off the holiday season in style with Bluffton's first annual Jingle Bell Stroll. On November 16 from noon-8:00 p.m., 18 Bluffton businesses will spread cheer and celebrate the spirit of giving.

In which year was the first Bluffton teenager pulled over by a Bluffton police officer and charged with speeding?

Would you believe 1919?
The holders of this distinction are Raymond Stratton and Tesla “Tubby” Stearns. These Bluffton speed demons may have raced at the unheard speed, topping perhaps 15 miles per hour,  and in so doing created an incredible racket.

The story as we understand it follows from an interview we had with “Tubby” in 1989, when he lived at Mennonite Memorial Home, 70 years after the incident. First, a little background on these two potential juvenile delinquents. Stearns was a 1918 Bluffton High School graduate and Stratton was a 1919 grad.

The holiday months (mid-November to post-January) can be extremely difficult for loved ones suffering from mental illness. It’s postulated that family members and friends can reach intolerable levels of anxiety and depression during this time due to accentuated family dynamics, financial strain and other stressors.
