Here's a St. John's United Church of Christ confirmation class from the early 1960s. Although we recognize most of the persons in the photo, we will invite Icon viewers to do the official identifications. Leland Gerber took the photo.

Ohioans e-file in record-breaking numbers - Ohio e-filers break the 4 million mark

The IRS announced that more than 4.1 million New Ohioans filed their 2010 individual federal income tax returns electronically for the period ending April 28, 2011.
This represents a 10.4 percent increase over e-filed returns for the same period last year and exceeded by nearly 500,000 the total number of e-filed individual income tax returns by Ohioans for all of tax year 2009. Ohioans submitted more than 3.6 million e-filed returns for tax year 2009.

Beavers set school record with 7th straight win (baseball)

The Bluffton University baseball team etched itself into the record books with its school-record seventh straight victory. The Beavers opened their three-game series at Hanover with a 12-8 victory over the Panthers on Friday, April 29, 2011. Bluffton evened its record at 17-17 overall and 9-10 in the Heartland Conference, while Hanover slipped to 13-19 and 8-10 in the HCAC.

Lady Pirates blast Anna 22-3

The rain did not damper the Lady Pirates Thursday as they traveled to LCC for a conference game with the T-Birds. The Pirates have been rained out all week, coming off a 6-4 loss to Crestview last Thursday and a 22-3 blasting of Anna on Saturday.

After a short wait on the rain to clear a bit, the Pirates opened up with a home run smash by Molly Lengyel in the first inning scoring two runs.

Superintendent addresses school plan to deal with shortage of revenue for fiscal 2011

Note: The following column is by Greg Denecker, superintendent of Bluffton schools. The column is part of the current school newsletter. A complete copy of the newsletter is an attachment at the bottom of this article.

I want to bring everyone up-to-date on the plans to deal with a shortage of revenue from fiscal year 2011. The new state budget proposal (which will probably pass close to current projections) will perpetuate a significant decrease in revenue for our district over the next two years.
