Bluffton softball team to aid cancer cause

The Bluffton University softball team will host its annual Strike-Out Cancer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society on Saturday, April 16. The Beavers will meet Ursuline College in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at the university softball field.

Individual Bluffton players may be sponsored for any amount; checks should be payable to the American Cancer Society.

A check for the total amount raised will be presented to the cancer society before the first pitch Saturday. The event has raised an average of $1,350 per year over the last nine years.

Bluffton University junior Rachel Giovarelli, from Wauseon, placed first in the university's annual C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest on April 6.

In addition to earning a $175 cash prize, Giovarelli qualified for a bi-national contest with top finishers from other North American Mennonite colleges.

Bluffton Public Library hosts several National Library Week Programs

In celebration of National Library Week (April 10-16), the Bluffton Public Library will host three free programs for children. The first is a "Green Project" recycled t-shirt and CD craft program on April 12 at 3:30 p.m. for grades K-12. Participants may bring one or more colored t-shirts to use for craft projects. No registration is necessary for this program.

Jean Moore 1919-2011

Jean Moore, 91 of Allen Park, Mich., died at 6:35 p.m. April 6, 2011 at Charlotte Stephenson Manor, Adrian, Mich.

On July 5, 1919 she was born to Leonard and Ida (Mann) Zimmerly, rural Pandora. At Pandora High School Jean played on the varsity championship basketball team.

After marrying Dale Moore in 1939, they lived in Allen Park, Mich., spanning 64 years. He died March 3, 2006. There she taught Sunday School for 15 years, was an aide to the physically handicapped for 6 years.

Oliver W. Schutz 1922-2011

Oliver W. Schutz

Oliver W. Schutz, 88, of Pandora died at 7:11 pm April 6, 2011 at his residence. He was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Pandora to Edward E. and Estella Hilty Schutz. On Aug. 5, 1950 he married Rachel Eicher on Aug. 5, 1950 and she survives.

Oliver was a farmer and also drove truck. He was a member of Grace Mennonite Church, Pandora. He sang in the church choir, the Swiss Male Chorus, the Bluffton Choral Society and at First Mennonite Church in Berne, Ind.

Mr. Schutz was a 1940 graduate of Pandora High School and was a WWII Army veteran.

Edith Lehman 1925-2011

Edith Lehman 1925-2012

Edith J. Lehman, 85, of Bluffton died 2:14 a.m. April 7, 2011, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima. She was born Nov. 27, 1925, in Normal, Ill., to Earl and Florence Guth Stuckey. On Sept. 29, 1945, she married Earl W. Lehman and he survives.

Mrs. Lehman was a piano teacher and accompanist. She was also a partner in Reistman's Clothing Store, Bluffton. She was a member of the First Mennonite Church, Bluffton and the Telesis Club.

She was a graduate of Morton, (Ill.) High School and attended Bluffton College.
