Poverty awareness sleep out

Bluffton University students make "homes" from cardboard boxes in which to spend the night at a Poverty Awareness Sleep Out on April 6.

Nine students slept on the Shoker Science Center lawn during the event, which was hosted by the campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity as part of Civic Engagement Day at Bluffton. The day capped yearlong exploration of the university's 2010-11 civic engagement theme, "Living with Enough: Responding to Global Poverty."

Don't forget Sunday's EMS barbecue

The Bluffton EMS will hold a chicken barbecue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, April 10. Serving is at the EMS building, behind the fire station on Main Street.Tickets are available for $6 each. Tickets are available from Jan Basinger at 419-236-1965, or by contacting any EMS member.

The meal includes one-half chicken, baked potato, green beans and a roll. Proceeds benefit the Bluffton EMS.Desserts are available for additional cost provided by and to benefit Bluffton First United Methodist youth group.

May 4 book discussion "The World Is Bigger Now"

Bluffton Public Library's monthly book discussion will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4. Read about an American journalist's release from captivity in North Korea in Euna Lee's The World is Bigger Now, a remarkable story of faith, family and forgiveness. The book discussion will be held at Common Grounds Coffeehouse & Caf'e.

Anyone interested in attending is welcome and a month-to-month commitment is not required. Copies of the book are available at the library.

Public Library jazzing it up on April 18

In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month, Bluffton Public Library is hosting "Jazz in the Stacks" on Monday, April 18, beginning at 6 p.m.

Jazz music will be presented by the Bluffton High School Jazz Band led by David Sycks. Refreshments will be provided.

June Marie Hauenstein Ludwig Ericson

June Marie Hauenstein Ludwig Ericson, 82, of Tucson and formerly of Bluffton, died April 6, 2011, at her residence in Tucson. She was born Dec. 31, 1928, in Bluffton to Clyde and Mary (Sutter) Hauenstein.

Mrs. Ericson was a sales manager for American Family Life, Insurance retiring in 1995. She was a member of B.P.O.E. #54 Lima, American Legion Auxiliary Post 96, Lima, where she was a past president. She was a graduate of Bluffton High School.
