Daniel Hughes speaks at ML King event Jan. 21

Daniel Hughes

Daniel Hughes of Bluffton is the featured speaker of the Bluffton Inter Church Board's Martin Luther King Day celebration. The event is Thursday, Jan. 21, at the Bluffton Senior Citizens Center.

A community meal is at 6 p.m. The King program follows the meal. Both are open to the public.

Hughes will give a tribute to King with a speech Crossing Over Into the Promised Land.

Library board sets monthly meetings

The Board of Trustees of Bluffton Public Library has set its meeting schedule for 2010. Board meetings will be held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the library's Riley Room. No meetings will be held in July or December.

Francis D. Nusbaum 1918-2010

Francis Nusbaum

Francis D. Nusbaum, 91 of Pandora died at 12:40 a.m. at Hilty Memorial Home, Pandora. He was born April 23, 1918 in Pandora to Gideon and Rose Haas Nusbaum. On Sept. 4, 1938 he married Grace Genevieve Sheidler and she died Oct. 14, 1998.

Mr. Nusbaum was a long time member of the Riley Creek and Pandora United Methodist churches. Francis and Genevieve owned and operated a grain and beef cattle farm in Riley Township For 45 years before retiring in 1990.

Locals on Haiti reported to be safe following earthquake

Dick Ramseyer, Bluffton Lions Club president informed The Icon that several Lions with local connections are in Haiti - and are reported to be safe - following the earthquake that struck that island nation yesterda.

The message Ramseyer sent to area Lions and to The Icon follows:

"With the recent news of the devastating earthquake in Haiti I wanted to alert everyone that we have several Lions from our district there on a VOSH trip and ALL ARE SAFE.

Locals on Haiti during earthquake reported safe

Several local residents are reported to be safe while visiting Haiti during the earthquake that struck that island nation yesterday.

Dick Ramseyer, Bluffton Lions Club president sent The Icon the following message that he also sent to area Lion members:

"With the recent news of the devastating earthquake in Haiti I wanted to alert everyone that we have several Lions from our district there on a VOSH trip and ALL ARE SAFE.

"Those on the trip are 2VDG Barbara Plaugher, PDG Larry Swords, PDG Ron Meyers, and PDG Dr John Moats and Lion Joanne. Again all are safe.

University announced ML King Day activities

Bluffton University students will participate in the nationwide Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Monday, Jan. 18. The day was initiated by Congress in 1994 as a way to honor the legacy of Dr. King by having a day for community service and education of his message of social justice and nonviolence.

Activities include:

1:30-3:30 p.m.
Limited to 15 students
Cleaning, painting, sorting donations
