2023 Memorial Day: Honor and remember the loss of service men and women

2023 Memorial Day celebrations in Bluffton took place on a day of vivid blue skies and steady breezes, punctuated by the military sounds of a jet flyover and rifle salute. A native of Bluffton and 1970 graduate of Bluffton High School, retired Colonel Larry Ruggley returned to the village to provide the Memorial Day address.

Student cross-cultural experience in Ecuador

Grant W. Klinger, of Bluffton, Ohio, is participating in a Bluffton University cross-cultural experience in Ecuador during the month of May.

Klinger, along with other Bluffton students, will spend time in Quito and Cuenca. They’ll explore historical, cultural and geological areas including the Equator Museum, city markets and an active volcano.

In Cuenca, students will stay with host families and volunteer at the Centro Medico clinic during the weekdays. In the evenings and on the weekends, students will travel to various cultural and historical sites including Ingapirca (Incan ruins), Gualaceo (artisan weavers), Chordeleg (artisan jewelry) and Cajas National Park.

Klinger is a sophomore majoring in Medical Laboratory Science.

This experience will fulfill Bluffton’s undergraduate cross-cultural requirement that must be completed before graduation. Students can either complete a cross-cultural experience or take six credit hours in one foreign language.

Rain barrel sale in Lima

Based on the average rainfall in Allen County, a 1,000 square foot house could potentially harvest 7,650 gallons of water each year just from the amount of rain that falls annually on its roof.

For over ten years, the Allen Soil and Water Conservation District has been selling rain barrels to those who wish to take advantage of this free source of water. This collected water can be used to hydrate gardens, lawns, wash off equipment, and more.

June 5 deadline for Pirate girls basketball camp, expanded to include 3rd grade

Ohio floriculture production dropped in 2022

Ohio floriculture was worth more than $240 million in 2022, according to the USDA NASS, Great Lakes Regional Field Office.

Ohio floriculture producers sold nearly $244 million worth of floriculture commodities in 2022. This was down 10 percent from the $269 million sold in 2021.
