Letter: Please don't mow roadside grasses

Dear Richland Township,

Do you realize that our roadsides and hedgerows of the past allowed for abundant migration for birds and butterflies?

These small creatures cannot get far without native grasses and foods such as berries, cattails, wildflowers and grasses that once grew along roadsides. Agribusiness chemical farming techniques have eliminated our traditional hedge rows to make large fields more appropriate for their huge machines to harvest and plow monocrops. And we mow our country roadsides.

Bluffton's reputation for being a tennis town goes back to the late 1800s. This colorized picture post card proves it. The wording on the card reads "Tennis Courts, Bluffton, Ohio." Bluffton University students, faculty to perform in New York City

Four Bluffton University music students will take their talents to a New York City stage Oct. 21.

The performers, also including Dr. Lucia Unrau, professor and chair of Bluffton's music department, will present a 7 p.m. recital that Thursday in Manhattan's Steinway Hall. A reception will follow with university President Dr. James Harder.

"Having a debut in New York City is rare as a college student, and our students are honored and grateful for this opportunity," said Unrau.

Captain Dan

Former Bluffton resident Dan Lehman is giving some green time in the Gulf utilizing his skills as a boat captain to help clean up the BP oil spill.
