Apple caramel pecan pie grand prize winner at Maple Crest
Is there anything more delicious than a homemade pie? On Friday, over 120 people took their fill of pies during the pie baking contest and spaghetti dinner hosted by Maple Crest Senior Living Village in Bluffton.
Eighteen pies were entered and judged in three categories. Kim Keck and Amber Henry combined their skills and won the title of Best of Show with their Apple Caramel Pecan and shared the $100 grand prize. Each winner in the other categories won $50 for first, $25 for second and $15 for third place.
In the “Fruit” category the Best of Show pie also won first place. Second place was won by Pat Lugibihl with a Pear Struessel Pie and third place was won by Jenny Barga with her Strawberry Pie.
First place in the “Cream” category was Becky Luginbill with her Peanut Butter Cream. Second place was Marian Kissling with her Butterscotch Pie, and third place was won by Emily Crawfis with her Cream Puff Pie.
The third category was “Nut/Other,” where first place was won by Barb Hohenbrink with a Three Layer Pumpkin Pie. Two place was won by Lydia Luginbill with her Pecan Pie and third place was won by Kim Keck and Amber Henry for their “Fat Elvis Pie.”
After the prizes were awarded, and the spaghetti dinners were eaten, the crowd was offered samples of the pies and allowed to bid on their favorite. The pie sale brought in $252 and along with the dinner, $840 was raised for the Maple Crest Memory Garden and Pier Project.
