Needed: a school board member with the entire community in mind

We recognize the significance of Dan Rumer's role in the Bluffton schools. Not only has he served as a high school principal, but also as a school board member. He is the only person ever to serve in both roles - of course, at different times.

We appreciate the devotion he has given to the school district as a professional and as a parent. He will be hard to replace on the board.

As we look back, there have been very few times that a school board member has resigned during a term. This is an unusual event. It is the school board's duty to select a replacement.

We have two wishes during this open window-period.

First, we urge the board to take its time to select someone who can view the larger educational picture of our school district. That someone should understand and appreciate all aspects of learning beyond reading, 'riting and 'rithmatic. There's also music, art, technology, foreign language, physical education and vocational education.

And yes, an interest in school finance, people relationships and good stewardship of our community resources is important.

Second, we urge persons in the school district with leadership roles and/or an educational background to come forth and make yourself known. We envision a board member as someone who is already deeply involved in the community, has children or grandchildren in the school system and is committed to having our schools continue to excel.

Let's look as this vacancy as a opportunity to continue the ideals and efforts that a Dan Rumer has placed in the school system.

Persons with narrow or one-issue views need not be considered.
