Thanks Fred for sharing the photo of the Pure Oil station at Main and Elm with the old Marathon station in the background.
By 1965, I thought that the Pure station was run by Bob Renner. That station ultimately closed and was replaced with a new Union 76 (successor to Pure Oil) station at the corner of Main and Jefferson, where Stratton's car business is now.
The Marathon station, now the A to Z building, was run by my father, Dick Cookson. He took it over after the passing of Lloyd Hardwick who ran that station for decades. For a while in this era, the Bluffton Vol. Fire Department was housed in the back of that building.
By 1970, A to Z bought the building and the Marathon station moved to a new building at Main and College, now the Speedway station.
Thanks, Ken Cookson
